Program Overview

The Start Smart Secondary program offers a suite of workshops developed for students in Years 7 -11. Each workshop focuses on a different topic in depth and explores financial concepts such as understanding the impact of financial choices, getting your first job and managing your mobile phone as well as basic investment principles, savings goals and budgeting.

The Secondary program is an interactive learning experience that is designed to engage students and empower them to make confident financial choices.

To maximise the impact and reach of the program in your area, our workshops can be delivered to whole cohorts of between 50 – 200 students. Each of our workshops can run between 40 – 60 minutes.

This workshop explores the foundations of financial decision making. Through a series of activities designed to stimulate thinking and have students reflect on their current spending habits, Smart Choices encourages discussion around the influences and factors that shape financial choices. The workshop helps students to question their purchases and understand the wider implications of their decisions.

Several concepts are covered including:

  • financial responsibilities
  • emotional motives affecting financial decisions
  • influences on spending
  • the difference between needs and wants

Using real-life scenarios, this hands-on workshop highlights the vital information students need to make their first job count. By exploring a variety of topics associated with earning money – such as getting your first job, rates of pay, taxation and workplace rights and responsibilities – students are equipped with the tools that allow them to both maximise their income and enjoy their work. These sometimes difficult concepts are brought to life in a way that excites and engages students through scenarios that relate directly to their own experiences.

Several concepts are covered including:

  • your first job
  • employee rights and responsibilities
  • award wages
  • tax thresholds
  • tax file number and lodging tax returns
  • checking your pay slip

This workshop run for 45-60 minutes.

By posing the question ‘why save now?’, Smart Saving helps students discover there is no time like the present when it comes to saving. This workshop encourages students to identify their most common barriers to saving, like irregular wages and binge spending, and then challenges them to identify practical strategies to overcome those barriers, like setting personal financial goals and securing savings in an account.

Several concepts are covered including:

  • the value of saving
  • setting saving goals
  • bank accounts
  • strategies for saving

By exploring the sometimes overwhelming influences that affect their decisions as consumers, students are equipped with practical spending strategies to help save money. Smart Spending inspires students to make responsible and discerning personal financial decisions.

  • emotional motives behind financial decisions
  • influences on spending
  • strategies for spending smart
  • examining the value of a potential purchase
  • refund and return policies

This workshop run for 45-60 minutes.

Exploring both the fundamentals of superannuation as well as the varied investment opportunities it presents, Smart Investing helps students understand that a small effort now can have big benefit when it comes to financially investing in the future.

The world of enterprise might seem foreign and far off to students, but small businesses make up more of the Australian economy than any other entity and their exposure to the business world is far closer than they may think. This workshop examines the characteristics of entrepreneurial thinking and how students can apply these insights in their own lives.

The Start Smart Secondary program visits many rural and regional areas around Australia. Contact us to find out if we’ll be visiting your area soon.

This workshop is designed to be delivered to the whole Year 10 cohort. It examines a range of topics related to earning, saving and spending. From their first job to effective saving strategies, students are given the essentials of personal financial management in a learning experience that is relevant and interactive.
