Program Overview

It’s never too early to teach children the value of money. Research indicates that it is crucial to develop financial literacy skills from an early age. The Start Smart Primary program teaches these skills in a way that students can understand and enjoy. It was developed with a panel of leading specialists in primary education, cognitive development, instructional design and financial literacy.

In this workshop, students learn about money as a concept – what it’s worth, and how to keep it safe. Guided by Captain Cash, students are excited about becoming superheroes with their money. By challenging them to ‘Speed to Their Needs’ and ‘Wait for Their Wants’, students are able to distinguish between their needs and wants, and prioritise spending accordingly. Using fun rhymes, hands-on activities and colourful characters, this workshop puts students on a lifelong path of practising solid financial habits.

Several concepts are covered, including:

  • an introduction to notes and coins
  • recognition of Australian currency
  • keeping money safe
  • the difference between needs and wants
  • using money in exchange for goods and services

This workshop runs for 45-60 minutes.
